The Job
As an Electricity Generation Worker, your work would involve the operation and maintenance of equipment within the power station. The station could produce electricity in one of a number of ways by utilising gas, coal, wind power or nuclear power. The main duties of the role include:
- Operating machinery directly or remotely from a control room if preferred
- Using machinery & plant such as generators, switchgear etc.
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults with mechanical and/or electrical equipment
- Carry out routine testing
- Handle materials used in the generation of electricity
- Comply with safety and environmental procedures in accordance with company policy

A good standard of education would be both expected for this role and it would be an advantage to have some GCSE's or equivalent qualification. This is covered in the section below.
Due to the nature of the working environment you will need to work in a safe and reliable manner. The working environment can range from a clean control room through to a workshop and on occasion can involve working in hot or confined conditions.
What are the entry requirements for this job?
One way of getting into this role is through an Apprenticeship, and a standard requirement for this is 4 GCSEs including Maths, English etc at Grades A-C and other relevant subjects, such as a science. The Diploma in Engineering may be suitable for this area of work.
How much will I get paid?
Apprentices usually earn in the region of £11,000 and £15,000 per annum which can increase to between £18,000 and £25,000 after training. A senior technician can earn in the region of £30,000.
