Gas Service Engineer

When you think of working in the gas industry this is probably the first job that pops into most people's head. 

What most people don't realise is that you need to be highly skilled and go through extensive training to be able to do this job.

The Job

The job of a Gas Service Engineer (Domestic Gas) involves;

  • Installing and servicing customer's central heating systems and appliances such as gas fires and cookers.
  • Diagnosing, finding and repairing faults.
  • Designing system upgrades to improve efficiency and flexibility.
  • Completing work sheets and records of their visit, the parts used and duration of the visit.

The job may involve all of the roles above or you may specialise in installation or servicing work.

The job involves using specialised tools so you should enjoy manual work.  You'll need to have a polite and courteous manner and good communication skills as you will be dealing with many customers.  You'll need to have a good basic knowledge of Maths as some aspects of the job will involve calculations.  Safety is the most important thing in this job as gas can be very explosive!

Steps to starting your career 

The first step to starting a career in the gas industry is to contact CORGI registered employers in your local area.  You could put a CV together and send it to employers in your area.  Details of employers can be found in the local press, Yellow Pages or at your local Jobcentre. 

You could also contact a local training centre who can advise you of training courses and links to any local employers.
