This is a very varied job, one minute you could be thinking of new ways of cutting down on the amount of waste they produce and the next minute you could be number crunching when compiling reports to ensure targets are met.
The Job
The job of a Waste Management Officer may involve;
- Assisting in the day to day management of contracts for outside contractors.
- Co-coordinating a team of people e.g. contractors, technicians and mechanics to ensure an efficient waste collection and disposal service.
- Researching, developing and implementing new and existing waste initiatives such as re-use and recycling schemes.
- Promoting and consulting on waste management initiatives to the general public and community groups.
- Collating statistics and compiling reports.
- Ensuring compliance with current legislation in the transportation, handling and disposal of waste.
- Formulating and controlling the budget for waste collection and disposal.
- Assisting in planning strategies for improving waste disposal.
- Respond to media and public enquiries.
Have you got what it takes?
You will need to have excellent communication and administrative skills and be confident and assertive when dealing with a wide range of people including members of the public and contractors.
Problem solving, planning skills and people management form a big part of the job.
You should also have a keen interest and knowledge in environmental issues and relevant legislation and above all you should enjoy a challenge!
