A lot of water that flows through the water distribution network gets wasted as it can leak through cracks in damaged pipes.
Many leaks aren't visible so sophisticated machinery and great skill is needed to find where they are.

The Job
The role of a Leakage Operative involves;
- Using specialist software to examine water flowing in and out of an area - any water unaccounted for could be a leak.
- Pinpointing leaks on the water distribution network mainly when there is no visible sign of them.
This job involves the use of very modern and sophisticated equipment.
Have you got what it takes?
Once you are in the target area you will attach equipment to pipes that will then produce reports to narrow down the search.
You will have to listen at ground level and use your skills to pinpoint a sound that may indicate there is a leak. Once you have found the leak you'll notify a repair team who will come out and fix it.
You should be prepared to work night shifts. Planned leakage detection often takes place at night as it's easier to hear a sound when there is less background noise, less water use and less traffic and people about.
You will need to be enthusiastic with a positive attitude and good problem solving skills. Some parts of the job will involve significant amounts of concentration.
You should be able to work well as a part of a small team as well as on your own initiative
