The Young Apprenticeship programme encourages bright 14-16 year old pupils to complement their school STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) studies by spending up to 50 days work placement/ experience in a safe, controlled work environment. The Young Apprenticeship is nationally endorsed by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DfCSF) and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
The programme aims to encourage individuals a progressive pathway into:

- An Energy & Utility Skills/ Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship Programme
- Post 16 Further Education
- Help towards secure future employment elsewhere within the energy/engineering sector
In addition to completing a Young Apprenticeship, the programme aims to enhance student personal development by promoting:
- A thorough understanding of the energy and utility Skills sector working environment
- The different engineering roles, occupations and professions within the business
- Opportunities to put classroom theory into practice, demonstrating the relevance of engineering principles within the workplace
- Opportunities to explore future employment opportunities and career progression routes
Students will gain industry awareness whilst also attaining an approved Level 2 sector related engineering qualifications accredited within the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Young Apprentices will, therefore, be well positioned to use the qualification and sector experience to make informed career choices.
The success of a Young Apprenticeship relies on the support and involvement of employers, education providers, pupils, parents and training providers.
The Young Apprenticeship Programme is currently only available in England.
