From April 2011, Functional Skills in English and mathematics are due to replace the equivalent Key Skills qualifications as a mandatory component of all Apprenticeship frameworks in England.

This is a requirement for the Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for England (SASE) compliance. Apprentices who register onto Key Skills before April 2011, will still be able to complete the Key Skills component up to the end of August 2012.

SASE prescribes the minimum level for Functional Skills achievements at Level 1 for Apprenticeships and Level 2 for Advanced Apprenticeships, where required by the job role. This applies to all Apprenticeships across England. Some Apprenticeships in the sector set higher requirements and achievement of the Functional Skills in IT.
