Streetsafe Sam has been working to tackle health and safety in the waste management industry since July 2007. To date over 3,320 of 'A Day in the Life of Streetsafe Sam' CDs have been distributed. The suite of interactive health and safety CDs currently covers three areas:

Module One: Domestic Waste Collection
Module Two: Civic Amenity Sites
Module Three: Commercial and Industrial Dry Waste Collection

'A Day in the Life of Streetsafe Sam' evolved from research completed by EU Skills in 2006. This research highlighted health and safety as a major issue of concern for waste management employers.

Part of the idea behind the development of the CDs was to disseminate best practice from the larger waste management organisations, as the industry consists of many small organisations, or local authorities, with not much funding to spare on the development of health and safety material.
There was a gap in the market for good quality induction material that was sufficiently generic to be used by the whole industry, but also ticked all the health and safety boxes. The CDs present a number of powerful messages in a fun way.

The CDs show a typical day in the life of an operative and are composed of a mix of photographic stills, movie clips, and interactive hazard awareness exercises to test the individual's knowledge of health and safety. Tests take the form of multiple choice questions and hazard spotting exercises. All of the CDs last approximately one hour and a printed report is produced at the end detailing the learner's performance and potential areas for improvement. It functions as an induction programme for new operatives and as a refreshed for more experienced existing staff.

It is anticipated that more modules for other occupational areas of the waste management industry will be developed in the future.
