New SF6 Gas Handing Scheme Industry Standards | EU Skills

New SF6 Gas Handing Scheme Industry Standards have been developed

In 2006 the European Union introduced Regulation (EC) No. 842/2006 concerning certain fluorinated greenhouse gasses.  This regulation included dealings with Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) due to its contribution (per kilo) to the greenhouse effect being approximately 30,000 times more damaging to the environment than Carbon Dioxide.

New SF6 Gas Handing Scheme Industry Standards have been developed

The regulations specify that all persons dealing with SF6 have to have received suitable training and be deemed competent through an assessment process to handle the gas, thereby preventing release into the environment at all stages from production to disposal.

Energy & Utility Skills has worked with members of the Electricity Standards and Qualifications Group to review current process and standards used across the sector to establish the competence of persons in the awareness and usage of SF6.

As a result of this three standards have been developed:

  • Category 1: SF6 Awareness
  • Category 2: SF6 Top Up & Test
  • Category 3: SF6 All Duties

Category 1: SF6 Awareness

Awareness details the required knowledge to establish a basic awareness of the hazards and environmental impact of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) and its usage in the operation of high voltage switchgear.

Category 2: SF6 Top Up & Test

Category 2: SF6 Top Up & Test details the required knowledge, skills and behaviours to establish competence in the handling and operation of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) in high voltage switchgear.

Category 3: SF6 All Duties

Category 3: SF6 All Duties details the required knowledge, skills and behaviours to establish competence in the handling, operation and de- commissioning of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) in high voltage switchgear.
